Community Service – Something positive to take from Covid 19 Era

The world is going through the crises of covid 19. One word that we often hear in this time is Community Service . ‘Giving back’ is the call of an hour.

Community service is not only the moral value but this has always been a part of our religious learning. Mahatma Gandhi often quoted our Vedic philosophy as ‘Nar Seva Narayan Seva’ which means that you can be at the service of God if you serve the humanity first. Our definition of seva is: “Service which is given without consideration of anything in return, at the right place and time to one that is qualified, with the feeling that it is one’s duty, is regarded as the nature of goodness.” — Bhagavad Gita 17.20

In Bible there are hundreds of verses which give emphasis on community service.

Luke 6:38. Give, and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For with the measure you use it will be measured back to you.

Seva or service is the core of Sikh tradition. It is defined as selfless service. Seva is a means to promote humility and demote egoism which is a basic concept of the Sikh religion and is one of three fundamental principles of Sikhism. It is described as Voluntarily serving the community without expecting anything in return. Sharing the income and resources including food and other goods.

Golden Temple in Amritsar, punjab,India runs the biggest community kitchen. On an average 50 to 100 thousand meals are served per day throughout the year.

The rise and spread of novel coronavirus has called for increase in voluntary service. Many NGOs and other institutions have come forward in providing relief during covid 19 in every part of the world. Many private sector and religious institutions have provided and performed the act of service. Plenty of us feel more inclined than ever to give back.

Through virtual or physical medium many of us have tried to serve the nation. It surely make us believe that we can fight any crisis if we stay united and serve the humanity. The world has seen an outpouring of solidarity.

India as a nation has launched a program by the name ‘Corona Warriors’ with the aim of getting volunteers from all walks of life across the state to support efforts to fight the pandemic. These volunteers have helped to build technological and medical infrastructure, offered telemedicine support from doctors, shadowed police personnel in enforcing the lockdown, as well as cooking and serving food for migrant labourers. The scheme has two core objectives – no one goes hungry, and everyone stays safe.

All the nations are urging their citizen to come forward and volunteer themselves to serve the community. Citizen of all the countries are uniting to help each other during the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

There are many ways that you can volunteer for community service at this time.

Donate to Nonprofits.Donate or Volunteer Safely with Food Banks and Pantries. Deliver Meals and Groceries to Vulnerable Seniors. Give Blood. Become a Medical Volunteer.

Not only during this pandemic but community service should be a part of an upbringing of child. Helping others helps you improve your skills. It makes a child more aware about the real world. It has a positive impact on society. This makes you learn about your social responsibility, improves your communication skills and critical thinking skills. More than that it makes you happy in an actual way. As a mother of a small kid,i try to make sure that my son is learning every aspect of life. We visit one day in an year to an NGO and deliver books and food items and what we get in return is a pure joy.

In my view it should be included in our law which will help the nation to stay united. Its not only a part of our life, It should be a way of life.

Hope you all agree with me!!!
